Toothache can be unbearable for many people, and we do not know too many natural alternatives to analgesics and anti-inflammatory pharmacy, which should not be abused.
We explain how to prepare homemade rinses that will help us to relieve pain, as well as foods, homemade toothpastes and other tips that also help us treat toothache naturally.
Clove mouth rinse
We recommend avoiding mouthwashes that are sold because they contain alcohol and other substances too aggressive for the pH of our mouth. Instead, we can make rinses with warm infusion of cloves two or three times a day, after brushing. Clove has traditionally been used for toothache, because it acts as an analgesic, slightly anesthetizing the painful area . It is recommended to chew directly. We do not recommend this remedy for children or pregnant women.
Another option to make natural rinses is to use sea water, which is alkalizing and remineralizing , in the proportion of one part of seawater to two and a half parts of natural water.
If we live in an area with sea we can pick it up ourselves, first thing in the morning, outside the bathing season, submerging a bottle under everything to avoid the top layer. We can also buy it in dietetics or herbalists, or use natural water with sea salt or diluted Himalayan salt.
Bach flower mouthwash
In pharmacies and herbalists we will find a preparation of Bach Flowers called Rescue, which is precisely to use in times of crisis, such as a toothache. To prepare the rinse we will put 4 drops in a glass of water and we will rinse and drink throughout the day. We can repeat it until we notice improvement.
Willow, the natural analgesic
The willow is known for its analgesic principles, from which the pharmacopoeia discovered aspirin. We recommend taking the willow extract according to the indicated dose. We can buy it in herbalists and parapharmacies.
External anti-inflammatory cream
While we perform internal treatments we can also apply externally, right in the area of the face corresponding to the affected tooth, some natural cream with anti-inflammatory effects , such as some based on clay and / or arnica. We will massage gently and repeat several times a day.
Application of cold
A remedy that does not fail and relieves a lot is to apply cold. We can use some frozen food or a little ice but always covered by a cloth. We will apply it directly on the face for at least half an hour.
Feeding against pain
Our diet should be rich in the following foods, which help reduce inflammation and pain:
- Fresh and seasonal fruit
- Vegetables and salads
- Whole grain cereal (rice, millet, quinoa, oats, etc.)
- Fruits and dried fruits
- Seeds (sunflower, sesame, pumpkin)
Likewise, we will mainly avoid foods that acidify the mouth and therefore tend to worsen pain and inflammation:
- Milk and dairy products
- Bread (yes we can eat dextrinated bread)
- White sugar
It is essential to clean the remains of food that may remain in the cavities of the mouth, so as not to aggravate the inflammation or cause infections. For them we can use daily the thread or dental floss, but with great care not to cause the bleeding of the gums. Then we will also carefully brush our teeth, in all directions, and try to reach all corners of the mouth. We can use soft toothpastes, to be able to be organic, that do not contain sodium lauryl sulfate , which is a substance too abrasive for our mouth.
A homemade toothpaste
We can prepare our own natural toothpaste by mixing the following ingredients:
- Three soup spoons of white clay for internal use
- Mineral water
- Sea salt well diluted in the water
- 2 drops of oregano or lemon essential oil
Mix the ingredients well with a wooden spoon and store the resulting paste in a glass jar.
