Maitake fungus: properties and relationship with cancer

The fungus Maitake , whose Latin name is Grifola frondosa is a fungus native to Japan, which grows in clusters at the base of trees, especially oak trees, and has been prized for its medicinal properties for centuries ; it is commonly known as a woodland hen , or ram’s head .

This fungus can be consumed raw or cooked; although many people consume Maitake as a dietary supplement, in capsule or extract form, or in liquid form for intravenous administration.

The fungus is known for its anticancer properties , where a human trial was conducted in 2009 at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and showed that maitake extract stimulates the of patients suffering from breast cancer.

Other laboratory studies conducted with Maitake, found the presence of grifolan , an important beta-glucan polysaccharide, with an anticancer activity, which has the ability to block the growth of cancerous tumors and improve the immune function of those individuals suffering from cancer.

According to the study published in the Townsend Letter, which involved more than 160 people with advanced cancer, Maitake has been found effective against leukemia, as well as in stomach and bone cancers.

In a clinical study in Japan, the efficacy of Maitake administration was investigated in 36 patients with cancer aged between 22 and 57 years , who were in stages II to IV; in them a regression of the cancer was observed , which results in a significant improvement of the symptoms in almost 70% of the patients of breast cancer, in almost 60% of the patients with liver cancer and of more than 60% of patients with lung cancer.
